The Polar Film Fest is a showcase of some of the best films on the polar regions available on the internet. There is a theme for each day (September 19-22), with a set of short films and one longer film. After Polar Week, the films will still be available on this website. If you don't have time during the Film Fest, be sure to come back to check them out later!
Virtual Watch Parties:
During each day of the Polar Film Fest, we’ll have scientists watching the #PolarFilmFest hashtag on Twitter to answer your questions. Check the schedules on the website to watch with us, or post your questions whenever you have time to watch!
If you’re a researcher and interested in participating in the virtual watch parties, email usapecs@gmail.com to get on the schedule. Hosting involves watching the films, tweeting your reactions and comments, and answering questions that might show up on the hashtag.
In-person watch parties:
Have access to a big screen? Host an in-person watch party. These can be through your department, lab, or at home with friends. All of the short films and some of the longer ones are available to stream for free online via YouTube or Vimeo. The feature films may require either paying for or arranging an educational screening of the film. The shorter films have been compiled into playlists that range from 45-60 minutes in length (except for People at the Poles, which includes two half-hour films and is somewhat longer). Join the conversation on twitter while you’re at it, and be sure to let us know how many of you are tuning in! Email usapecs@gmail.com to get your event on our list.
Films in the classroom:
These playlists can be great additions to your classroom. We recommend the playlists of shorter films for classrooms, where several topics are covered over the course of the set of videos. Teachers can skip films based on the time available and the amount of discussion between the videos. Frozen Worlds (the cryosphere) and Mostly Cute (polar ecology and biology) are both well suited to classrooms, covering a variety of topics at approachable levels.
