2020 Board Recruitment & Year End Survey

Are you an early career researcher doing work in polar or alpine regions? USAPECS would like to invite you to take our survey on our activities over the past year!

Find the survey here: https://forms.gle/u67tCQGU5iWJJdA88

With the start of a new year, USAPECS (http://usapecs.wixsite.com/usapecs) would also like to announce our call for applications for the 2020 executive board. Members of the USAPECS Board are expected to work together to develop and execute activities that are of interest and beneficial to Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) members living in the US. These activities can include anything you're passionate about—relevant to polar early career researchers—from organizing social events or panel discussions at meetings to running a remotely-hosted AMA (‘Ask-Me-Anything’) session or organizing a webinar.

Our activities in 2019 included:

  • a blog series focusing on ‘Navigating Your Early Career’ (https://usapecs.wixsite.com/usapecs/advice-for-ecrs)

  • our annual Polar Film Festival (https://usapecs.wixsite.com/usapecs/pff2019)

  • a webinar series featuring introductions to polar science

  • a panel and social event at the American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting in San Francisco, the panel focused on our blog topic (https://usapecs.wixsite.com/usapecs/agu-early-career-panel)!

  • social media development and maintenance

Task groups we hope to continue to run in 2020 include:

  • AGU events for Fall Meeting 2020

  • Polar Film Festival

  • social media

  • a new blog series

  • webinars

  • website maintenance

New task groups we intend to launch include:

  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

  • an IARPC Collaboration on the Early Career Forum (https://usapecs.wixsite.com/usapecs/iarpc).

This is a great opportunity to become more involved in the broader polar science community within the US. The time commitment varies depending on your level of involvement, but is typically two hours or so per month unless you are particularly involved in an activity (like running a scicomm workshop or leading the organization of the polar film festival).

If you're interested in serving on the USAPECS Board in 2020, please send an email to USAPECS@gmail.com with:

  • your name

  • title of your current position (undergrad, Masters student, PhD student, postdoc, faculty, science tech, science outreach coordinator, etc)

  • where you are employed (or the University you are attending)

  • a few short sentences on why you think you would be a good fit for the USAPECS board and activities you would like to help organize this year. We especially welcome new ideas associated with the task groups we hope to run in 2020 and how you intend on helping to see those through.

Applications are due January 17th. We will have an online meeting to welcome new members at the end of January.

We look forward to seeing your applications!

Kind regards,

Mariama Dryak, Erika Schreiber, Lance DiAngelis, John Read
